2023 Homecoming Recap

Daniel Clarke
All six fall sports were on show at St. Luke’s 2023 Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The morning rain didn’t prevent a great showing at the annual SLS Fun Run. Current team members, coaches, parents, and alums met outside the Athletic Center for a quick photo before heading out for a short run to get the sporting events underway.

The next event of the day was a varsity field hockey contest against Kennedy Catholic School at noon. In front of a boisterous crowd, St. Luke’s delivered a fine performance to beat the Gaels 7-1. Two goals from Emma Ryan ’26 and a goal each from McLlain Boege ’24, Sofia Staikos ’24, MJ Owens ’24, Ingrid Kerr ’25, and Grace O’Connor ’24 gave the Storm a tremendous homecoming win.

The next varsity match was boys soccer vs. Brunswick School. The game kicked off at 12:15 p.m. on the Class of 2015 field, and the Storm raced into a 3-1 lead with goals from Nikolai Bonwetsch ’24, Javier Minuesa ’25, and Eli Broday ’24. Unfortunately, the Storm was pegged back in the second half as the Bruins scored three unanswered goals to win the game 3-4.

The next contest was volleyball inside Carey Gymnasium against Austin Preparatory School. The Storm started the game strongly and took a 2-0 lead, but the Cougars came back to claim the next three sets and the match.

Varsity football played the penultimate game of the day against Albany Academy at 2 p.m on Watson Field at Pedrick Stadium. In a tough matchup, the Storm led 27-22 before Albany scored a touchdown with just 1:34 remaining.

The final event of the day was a girls varsity soccer match against The Millbrook School at 2:30 p.m. St. Luke’s delivered a fine performance to beat the Mustangs 7-1 and cap off another tremendous Homecoming day. A hat-trick from Lena Olbrys ’25, two goals from Sienna Pilla ’24, and one each from Sarah Lau ’24,  and Cam Nelson ’25 sealed the victory for the Storm.

Athletic Director Anna Knecthel was thrilled with how the athletic events unfolded: “Homecoming was an incredible display of sportsmanship and excitement on the Hilltop. Even though the weather was a little dreary, we saw so much energy at the games. We loved having Hefty lead the teams out, and we got to enjoy a few great wins! It was also fun to see Stormy in attendance. We are extremely thankful to our incredible mascot for getting the teams and fans excited for the big day.”
